Publishing

What is website publishing?

The act of uploading your web page or site to your web server to allow the browsing of the page/site is known as publishing. Xara Web Designer enables you to publish your web pages to your web space directly from within the program.

How do I get my web space and details on accessing my web space?

Web Designer Premium and Designer Pro include Xara ‘M’ Hosting, free for one year (worth $1.99 a month). This offers 2Gb of free web hosting space and one free domain name (e.g. yourname.com or .co.uk or .de etc). Web Designer Premium and Designer Pro owners will receive a coupon code for registering M Hosting in their Web Designer Premium or Designer Pro purchase confirmation email.

Once registered you will be able to publish with Xara Hosting by selecting the Xara Hosting option in the publish dialog and entering their Xara account user name and password.

There are many other web hosting companies that provide you with space on a shared server or even a dedicated server to upload (publish) your website to.

Your host would typically provide you with

  • A certain amount of web space to which you can upload your website.
  • A website address at which the website can be viewed.
  • FTP details - address and logon details for publishing your website
    • Host address: - the address to which the files should be FTP'd
    • Username: - your username for accessing the web space on the host's server
    • Password: - Your password for accessing the web space on the host's server
    • Some hosts may also provide you with the path to your publishing directory. This will be the path from the directory you are directed to on login, to the directory in which you should publish your web pages to.

Can I preview my site locally prior to publishing?

All versions of Xara contains an in-built browser window which is accessed by selecting to preview website or preview page from the file menu.

Preview website
Preview website exports all the pages of your site and then brings up the preview window. So all the pages and links in your site should be working.

Preview web page
Preview page exports and previews only the current page. So it's useful if you have a large site which takes some time to export as a whole

Although this internal preview uses a simplified version of the Internet Explorer browser by default, Since version 7, you can choose one of the five most popular browser types to view your page or website from the preview window.

To preview your website in your favourite web browser, click on the icon associated with your browser of choice from the top right side of the internal preview window.  Version 7 allows you to preview your website in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari.

note: These buttons are only enabled if you have installed the browsers on your PC.

How do I publish my website

Since version 9, the program provides an integrated method of publishing to MAGIX online world or Xara Hosting and also still allows you to publish to another web host.

Simply select file > publish website in order to publish either to MAGIX online world or Xara Hosting or to another web host.

You will need to upload your website to your web space provided by your hosting company.  If you do not have a location to host your website then we recommend Xara Hosting.

The act of uploading your web page or site to your web server to allow the browsing of the page/site is known as publishing.  Xara Web Designer enables you to publish your web pages to your web space directly from within the program.

Simply click on Website properties (Utilities | Web properties) followed by the Publish tab.

Apart from standard FTP (file transfer protocol) Designer Pro also supports the more secure FTPS and SFTP options. Some web hosting companies will only support the more secure FTPS or SFTP options.  Please click here for more information on publishing via FTPS and SFTP.

Your host is likely to allow you to upload your web pages to your hosting space via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) as this is the most common method of transferring files from your computer to the web space provided by a hosting company.  They will provide you with your FTP Publishing details and this will usually consist of

The Publish tab allows you to enter all of this relevant information.  Any information entered in this tab will be saved when clicking on Apply or OK and will remain populated for any document you open in Web Designer.

Selecting to publish website from within Xara Web Designer will cause the program to transfer the website from your local computer to your web space on the server provided by your host.

Full details are provided within the program help file. Please select 'Publishing your website' from the Help files Contents menu.
